Questo incrocio di 西单 (Xidan) e' un inno al consumismo, con una lunga fila di centri commerciali da una parte, l'enorme e fornitissima libreria 图书大厦 (Tushu Dasha) dall'altra e la 文化广场 (Wenhua Guangchang, la Piazza della Cultura) al centro. This crossing in 西单 (Xidan) is a hymn to consumerism, with a long row of department stores on one side, the huge and rich bookshop 图书大厦 （Tushu Dasha) on the other, and the 文化广场 (Wenhua Guangchang, the Culture Square)  at the center. In spring or summertime, playing a game of 象棋 (Xiangqi) on the side of the street is quite a common pastime in Beijing, as in many other chinese cities. Il 遛鸟 (Liuniao, portare a spasso uccellini nella gabbietta e appenderli a cinguettare nei parchi) e' un'attivita' tipica degli anziani (e nemmeno cosi' tanto) pechinesi. Si vedono spesso gabbiette di legno appese in giro con uccellini canterini all'interno, allevati appositamente. The 遛鸟 (Liuniao, i.e. bringing little caged birds around and hanging them in parks to let them sing) is a traditional activity of old (and not so old) Beijingers. It's common to spot little cages like this, with singing birds inside, hanging on a tree branch in parks and on urban sidestreets.
